What may seem as a wonderful adventure in Europe leading you to Monte Carlo, will soon turn out a typical tour guide bus running its course.
The story starts out with Grace (Selena Gomez), a typical girl from Texas who's saving up money to go to the city of her dreams... Paris. She's also just around the corner from graduating high school and works at a local diner with her best friend Emma (Katie Cassidy) , who also wants to go to Paris. At the event of her graduation an unexpected visit from her sister Meg (Leighton Meester) breaks her happy mood as Meg tends to be pessimistic and discouraging of everyone around her. Emma also dumps her boyfriend Owen, after he sabotages her plans of going to Paris by pressuring her to marry him. At dinner their parents decide that Meg should come with the girls to ensure everything is fine, but the girls are not in favor of this idea from the beginning.
Once they arrive in Paris, everything isn't as it should be for the trio as they lose their tour bus and have to stay in an under-par hotel room. After getting caught in the rain they stop for shelter in a posh hotel where Grace is unexpectedly being photographed because she looks exactly like the British princess Cordelia Winthrop-Scott (also played by Gomez). The girls soon decide for Grace to take on the personality of the cold and heartless Cordelia in order for them to stay at the posh hotel. But just as they are starting to settle in, they are whisked away to the beautiful city of Monte Carlo where they are greeted by royals, parties, expensive clothes and jewelry. Grace is overwhelmed by the enormous pressure to keep her charade up for the sake of not being noticed as a fake, while Meg meets her love interest and Emma realizes how she misses her boyfriend, Owen (Cory Monteith). Can they keep their noses up without getting noticed or will the real Cordelia finally take notice of what is going and take charge? After Monte Carlo, these small town girls will certainly have a new perspective on life.
From a critical standpoint I would say the story is a typical fairytale for tweens and teens about the possiblity of finding love while on a holiday. All very cute, but totally unrealistic. The views of Monte Carlo and Paris are absolutely gorgeous though, and they are the ultimate lifesavers of this production's poor acting. This was actually meant to be a movie starring Nicole Kidman and Julia Roberts but the studio wanted the characters to be younger, which didn't quite help the plot of the story at all. The ballroom gowns are very beautiful and flatter all three stars of the movie keeping the attention away from their acting once again. The movie does have a couple of small points to make however. The first being that, you can change and learn a lot when you are away from home and the second is that kindness is ultimately the way into anyone's heart. So, the movie isn't completely pointless. I don't think this film deserved to be in theaters, more like the Disney Channel, but I did enjoy the sights displayed. If you are a fan of Selena, then you will probably love it but then again, that would be a very narrow fanbase for this film.
